ROCKFORD (WREX) — After nearly a century in Rockford, Roma Bakery says it's ready to close its doors for good. The bakery's last day of serving customers will be Dec. 31st.
"It's the end of the road for us," says owner John Bowler. "We've been here 95 years. I've been here 35. My parents were here 65. My grandparents started it in 1924."
Bowler knows his family's labor of love has been part of family traditions for generations.
"It's touched a lot of lives. It's sad to see it go but we've done all we can do and we're tired, we're retiring."
Even if you've never stepped foot in the bakery chances are you've enjoyed their goodies at other local establishments.
"Pinons, Meads, Trade Rite, Countryside, Hoffman House, 15th & Chris, we've touched a lot of people and when you do break it down it's amazing really," says Bowler. "A lot of community, a lot of friends, a lot of friendship over 90 years."
One of those oldest friendships is with Penguin Foods. It's also a third generation family business that's relied on Roma for decades.
"We've been business partners with Roma for three generations, " says owner John Ciembronowicz. "My grandfather went there for his bakery goods, my dad did, we did."
Ciembronowicz says the relationship with Roma is like family.
They've always been there for me even three o'clock in the morning if I need to pick something up they're like, 'Yeah come on by we'll get it for you'. We're like families together. That's the way it's been, that's the feeling we've had. Boy we are really going to miss them."
15th and Chris shared similar sentiments after learning of the bakery's planned closure. The burger joint sent 13 News the following:
"This is a tremendous lost to the community. Every day that 15th and Chris was open we walked into Roma Bakery to receive fresh buns for our burgers. It was a great product and the customer service was epic and consistent. A community gem and a big lost to the neighborhood which was deep rooted in a lot of history. Thank you Roma Bakery. Over 90 years of business is a true definition of commitment."
Joe and Sandy Nicosia say they bakery will always be in their hears. The couple married last summer and say Roma created a beautiful cake for their big day.
"I grew up on this side of town for many years and being Italian we've gone to Roma over the years," says Joe. "My family buys bread here. It's one of the last Italian places left in the neighborhood so it's going to be sad to see them go."
So like any good tried and true recipe, Roma has stood the test of time.
"It's been a good run, and we want to thank you, but there's only so many cannolis you can bury in the backyard," says Bowler. "We've done all we can do."
