TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - As you start looking for items to fill your holiday dessert table, one local bakery has you covered!
A few short years ago, Nancy Clasemann never imagined she would be the proud owner of a local bakery.
She said, "For decades while working corporate, I always referred to it as my creative outlet."
Realizing baking was her passion did not come easy though.
"As a female in the workplace you're not always taken seriously if you really enjoy doing domestic things," Nancy said.
Between being laid off from her job and her mother passing away, Nancy found herself pursuing baking like she never had before.
She said, "That really makes you reflect on what are you doing in your life, what do you really want to be doing and if this is your passion and what you really feel you're here on earth to do, how do you make it be more of a year round thing."
She finally took a leap of faith and opened 'Baking Traditions.'
All products are baked from scratch, using ingredients passed down from generations.
Nancy said, “Baking from scratch is something I grew up with. You didn’t buy those things in the store, you made them at home.”
At the bakery customers can find an assortment of breakfast items.
“You can get scones and rolls and muffins and come on the right day, you can even get croissants too," Nancy said.
They also have soups, salads and sandwiches, as well as treats perfect for the holidays.
"We make Babka, both chocolate and cinnamon walnut. We do mini cinnamon rolls arranged like a tree. We are going to have a little Christmas cookie gift tin of 12 assorted cookies. We’re also going to do what we call a sugar cookie DIY kit, so that you can have some fun with the kids and not have to go to all the kitchen mess of making the cookies yourself.”
Nancy said opening her own business has been both exhilarating and scary at times, but if her mother could see her now, “She would probably not like how much credit I give her because she was a very humble person," she added, "I think she would be proud too.”
Baking Traditions is located at 4036 SW Huntoon St., near Gage Blvd.
It is open 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
