Hahdough German Bakery Is Opening a Window in Hayes Valley - Eater SF

Hahdough, San Francisco’s only German bakery, hasn’t even swung open the doors on its first storefront in NoPa, but Black Forest cake enthusiasts are already getting more great news: Owner Ha Do is taking over a small kitchen space in Hayes Valley, and will open it as a second location, if only in the form of a sweet bakery window.

Originally from Vietnam, Do grew up in Germany and has been introducing the city to the traditional pastries she misses from her childhood for the past few years. Now, not one but two neighborhoods will get to enjoy the traditional cakes, tortes, jammy donuts, and chewy pretzels she has been selling at local farmers’ markets.

Hahdough is taking over the Cakemaker’s space at 509 Laguna Street, just across the street from the Riddler and around the corner from Petit Crenn, at the quieter end of Hayes Valley. It’s a very petite 400 square feet, but after working out of commercial kitchens and shared spaces for the past few years, Do needed her own kitchen space and wanted to be able to set her own schedule. She lives in the neighborhood, and when the Cakemaker’s Bala Subrahmanyam mentioned he was ready to retire, she jumped at the opportunity to take over the tiny kitchen, which she’ll now use as her production facility.

The shop Do already had in the works at 1221 Fell Street in NoPa will definitely be the larger location, where diners can walk in, order from a more extensive menu, and sit down with a slice of cake and a cup of coffee. The Hayes Valley bakery window will have earlier hours and a shorter menu, featuring half a dozen cakes, donuts, and pretzels. Do says she’ll always include a couple of classic cakes available by the slice, such as the Black Forest and Bee Sting, as well as a couple of seasonal options. The Berliner donuts stuffed with jam, which have been a hit with German families and especially small children, also made the cut.

Both locations have suffered delays, but Do hopes to finally open both in February, likely starting with the bakery window in Hayes, followed by the shop in NoPa. Stay tuned for additional cake updates.
