Chicago Bridgeport bakery turned home sold by Patrick Daley - Crain's Chicago Business

Patrick Daley, son and grandson of the two Chicago mayors, sold a stylish six-bedroom home in Bridgeport that he made out of a historical corner store building.

Originally built in the early 1890s, the six-bedroom home on 31st Street sold Jan. 31 for $825,000.

The house has graphic-print tile floors, a blue and white kitchen, crisp modern finishes, scraped brick walls and a rooftop deck. “It looked fabulous and it’s unique because of its history” as a retail building with apartments above, said Deb Hess, the Compass agent who represented the property.

Hess declined to comment on the sellers. Patrick Daley did not respond to a request for comment.

The building is about 1.3 miles northwest of the Lowe Avenue bungalow where Patrick Daley’s father, Richard M. Daley, grew up and where his late grandfather, Richard J. Daley, lived during his mayoralty.

In 2016, a legal entity headquartered in the North Michigan Avenue office of Tur Partners, the investment and advisory firm where former Mayor Richard M. Daley is executive chairman and Patrick Daley is a principal, bought the vacant building from a lender who had foreclosed on a former owner.

The Tur entity paid $270,000 in May 2016, according to the Cook County recorder of deeds. A few months later, Tur handed title of the property over to Patrick Daley.

The rehab included adding a new staircase and enclosed space where two pieces of the building had at some point been separated, Hess said, and integrating the first-floor former retail space with the apartments above. She was not sure how many apartments there had been. The result is a 5,300-square-foot home.

Patrick Daley had the home on the market from July until December. The asking price initially was $874,900, but by the time it went under contract it had come down to just under $845,000.

Hess’ listing says the building formerly housed “a popular neighborhood bakery,” but in an interview she said she doesn’t know what bakery it was or when it closed. The family assured her “it was legendary,” Hess said. (It was not the famous Bridgeport Bakery, which closed in October after 78 years making paczki and other treats nearby on Archer Avenue, and reopened last week.)
