Neighborhood sweets shop, Scratch Bakery, is moving from its location on Mellen in Pheobus to another that offers more real estate space…directly across the street.

Come spring, Lashonda Sanford, owner of Scratch Bakery, said patrons will be able to enjoy their ice cream and cupcakes on a covered outdoor patio, adding the space will also allow for an expansion in services.

“We’re going from a bakery and ice cream shop to almost a full-service restaurant,” she said. “Our ‘baby Scratch’ is growing.”

Homemade chicken pot pies are already a weekly fan favorite which Sanford said is on the menu with chicken salad sandwiches and soups but soon breakfast options like scones, muffins, and danishes will also be included during new expanded hours.

Scratch will also offer a full coffee menu, an option Sanford said she thinks the area is missing.

“We’re going to be the coffeehouse with espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes…a place with free WiFi, TVs, seating, or even a place where the college students can just relax in a great atmosphere with a great smelling aroma.”

Like the bakery’s location in Newport News, the new store will also have a separate dining area for cupcake decorating parties and other private events.

Scratch Bakery has been serving gourmet 3D cakes and up to 20 flavors of cupcakes in Hampton since 2016 but has been a mainstay in Newport News since 2011 and across the Peninsula with its food truck at community events.

Sanford said expanding the brand in Phoebus — and specifically on Mellen Street — was naturally the next step for Scratch.

“Mellen is a central part of Pheobus…the businesses that are thriving and growing even within just the last few years make Mellen a great street,” she said.

When it comes time to move from the current Phoebus store to the next, Sanford said customers shouldn’t see any interruption in normal operational hours at the bakery located at 36 Mellen St.
