A popular bakery has closed just months after moving into a new location.
La Calavera announced on its Facebook page that yesterday would be its last day in business after eight years.
Baking bread for a living looks a lot simpler, easier and more charming than it is. The toll that this work takes on the body and mind is heavy. One man can’t do it alone indefinitely, on the scale that we’ve been attempting. Unable (still, despite constant searching) to get the production help we need to make our bread and sustain this business, we have to make a change, the announcement reads in part.
The business moved in summer 2019 from its initial location on East College Avenue in Decatur to 1696 Memorial Drive SE in Atlanta.
A property listing with local real estate firm The Schumacher Group says the space is 1,060 square feet with an outdoor deck and a “large backyard area that’s prime for turning into an outdoor (or indoor) seating area.”
The property is priced at $475,000 including the real estate, building, and all furniture, fixtures and equipment.
La Calavera owners Dale Ralston and Eric Arillo started selling their baked goods including ojos de buey (“oxen eyes,” a puff pastry-wrapped almond cake), mini-babkas, cinnamon rolls, breads and and orejas (elephant ears) sold its products at local farmers markets in addition to its brick-and-mortar location.
