LOGAN SQUARE — Rosati’s Pizza is taking over Mexican bakery Panaderia La Central’s old storefront beneath the California Blue Line station in Logan Square.
The new pizza joint at 2218 N. California Ave. should be open by the end of March, though it could open sometime in February depending on how construction shakes out, according to Amanda Esczuk, director of marketing for Rosati’s.
Esczuk said it’ll be the pizza chain’s seventh Chicago location.
Asked what drew Rosati’s to Logan Square, Esczuk said the franchisee runs locations in Lincoln Park and the South Loop and found that the thin-crust pizza does really well in those neighborhoods.
“It’s something that Logan Square doesn’t necessarily have,” she said.
Rosati’s serves both thin-crust and deep dish pizza, as well as salads and appetizers.
The first Rosati’s opened in the Chicago suburbs in the mid-1960s. The pizza chain now has locations in 15 states.
Panaderia La Central closed in May of 2018 after calling the California Avenue storefront home for 35 years.
Gentrification sounded the death knell for the small Mexican bakery.
“A lot of young kids are moving into the area, but the young kids don’t buy bread. It’s the older Hispanic people that buy bread,” owner Rosa Acevedo previously said.
“[Logan Square] is going to be the next Wicker Park, where everything is bars and restaurants. And the little places… I don’t think they are going to do too well.”
