Jewish bakery Babka by Ayelet, run by Israeli pastry chef Ayelet Nuchi, has closed after 14 months in Palo Alto’s Town & Country shopping center.
News spread all the way to New York when the babka-only bakery first opened in December 2018. It was thought to be the only one of its kind, possibly in the entire country, offering up to eight flavors of the yeasted and stuffed cake in a chic, pastel-hued cafe.
In a phone interview Friday, Nuchi cited insurmountable differences with the Town & Country landlord as the reason for the closure. “They hated me from the beginning and were really nasty to me,” she said. “I could’ve stayed and been miserable, but I’ve decided to take my business and go.”
Nuchi is currently looking at two storefronts on State Street in Los Altos and hopes to close in on one soon. In the meantime, she’s updating her website to take online orders of the babkas in flavors like halva, raspberry cheese, cinnamon, chocolate and Nutella.
In 14 months of business, Nuchi’s bakery made a splash. Business was always good; when she wasn’t filling special orders for bat mitzvahs and other celebrations, she was selling out of her babkas by by 3 p.m., especially on weekends.
“I have the best clients ever and we’re going to be offering more items that people have been asking for,” she said. “It’s going to be great.”
